Andrea Stella said McLaren protected part of its cost-cap budget so it could keep developing the MCL40 through the season as teams search for performance under the new regulations.

McLaren split its first major upgrade between Miami and Canada, then added more parts in Monaco, Barcelona and Austria. A planned Austria trial of its revised wing was dropped after final checks.
