McLaren stopped Oscar Piastri to protect its position from Lewis Hamilton's undercut, giving race leader Piastri strategic priority. The decision opened a different strategy for Lando Norris, who used his pace in clean air to move ahead.

Piastri had taken the lead on the opening lap but lost time after contact with the lapped Carlos Sainz. Norris emerged ahead after his stop, while Piastri later retired with a gearbox problem.
