Villeneuve used one paddle for both upshifts and downshifts, allowing him to change gear without moving his hand during high-speed corners. He also preferred throttle travel of only 18 to 20 millimetres for more precise control.

Williams added pedal supports to steady his legs and protect his feet, while race engineer Jock Clear sometimes acted as a traffic spotter at starts. Villeneuve brought several of these ideas from IndyCar.
