Massa suffered life-threatening injuries during qualifying and required emergency surgery. Smedley initially suspected a mechanical failure when the Ferrari slowed, but the lack of a radio response and unusual braking and throttle inputs revealed a far more serious incident.
The experience left Smedley questioning whether he wanted to remain in Formula 1. Massa recovered from the crash and later returned to racing.
