Fernando Alonso will continue racing in Formula 1 for at least one more season after signing a contract extension with Aston Martin through 2027. The 45-year-old Spaniard took time to consider his future as Aston Martin struggled to tenth in the Constructors' Championship this year, requiring a major upgrade package in Hungary to move into the midfield.

Alonso made his decision after conversations with team owner Lawrence Stroll and new technical chief Adrian Newey, believing the team can turn around their fortunes despite current difficulties. The two-time world champion acknowledged that much of whether Aston Martin becomes competitive again is beyond his control, but he remains committed to the long-term project.

Lance Stroll will partner Alonso again in 2027, with the Canadian having endured 11 retirements this season due to reliability issues. Alonso's extension demonstrates faith in Newey's ability to develop a competitive car, though the team currently relies on Honda engines that trail significantly in performance compared to leading power unit manufacturers.

The deal means Alonso will enter his 24th Formula 1 season in 2027, allowing his infant son Leonard to watch his father compete. Alonso stressed his continued physical and mental fitness, pointing to his ninth-place finish at Zandvoort as evidence he retains the speed and determination to perform at the highest level.
