Fernando Alonso committed to extending his Formula 1 career through 2027 with Aston Martin, citing his continued belief in his own speed as the primary motivation. The 45-year-old Spaniard will compete in his 24th season, describing a straightforward five-minute conversation with team owner Lawrence Stroll to finalize the deal.
Alonso revealed he still feels the fire inside and does not want to let that passion fade. He explained that when watching races from home, he feels he can perform better than the drivers on track, similar to his feelings during his temporary absence from Formula 1.
The two-time champion acknowledged having no guarantees that 2027 regulations will provide more enjoyable racing, but said he remains fast and motivated. His wife supports the decision, though Alonso joked she prefers him away when the team is not competitive.
Alonso continues pushing for further regulation changes, particularly limiting battery power deployment to create more natural speed profiles on circuits. He hopes the 60-40 power split for 2027 and experience with the current rules will provide better racing, while giving Aston Martin's ambitious project another opportunity to succeed.
