Alpine executive consultant Flavio Briatore expressed confusion over the stewards' decision not to penalize Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad for his collision with teammate Liam Lawson during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix safety car restart. Franco Colapinto received a five-place grid penalty for triggering a separate collision at the same restart.
The stewards cleared Lindblad because they determined the contact resulted from restricted space and the chain reaction caused by Colapinto's incident ahead. Both Alpine drivers retired from the collision involving Colapinto, Gasly and Norris, while the Racing Bulls pair continued racing.
Briatore argued that Lindblad's actions were identical to Colapinto's, questioning the inconsistency in penalties. Alpine lost six points to Racing Bulls in Baku after gaining ground on their championship rivals in the previous three rounds.
The incident has left Alpine 15 points behind Racing Bulls in their battle for fifth place in the constructors' championship, making every point crucial in the remaining eight races of the season.
