Lando Norris revealed a fuel system issue has compromised his straight-line performance in recent Formula 1 rounds, causing him to lose speed compared to teammate Oscar Piastri. The McLaren driver believes the problem cost him two or three qualifying positions over the past two weekends, with the team working extensively to identify the root cause.
McLaren believes they have identified and resolved the fuel system issue, though Norris noted the potential performance gain won't be as significant at Singapore due to the circuit's lack of long straights. The problem particularly affected his qualifying pace in Azerbaijan and Malaysia, where straight-line speed plays a crucial role.
Norris described the frustration of coming out of corners better than rivals only to go slower on the following straights due to the fuel system malfunction. The issue appeared intermittently rather than consistently, making it difficult for McLaren's engineers to diagnose and fix during race weekends.
Singapore's Marina Bay circuit should minimize the impact of any remaining straight-line deficits due to its tight layout and numerous corners. However, Norris emphasized that drivers always want maximum performance on every part of the track, regardless of whether straights represent the highest priority at specific venues.
