Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will both receive substantial grid penalties for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after the team fitted new engine components that exceed their seasonal allocations. The FIA confirmed that Alonso will receive a 25-place grid penalty while Stroll takes a drop of 20 positions.
Alonso's car features a fresh internal combustion engine, his fifth unit exceeding the permitted allocation of four. He will also run his fifth turbocharger and ninth power unit ancillary component, well beyond the allowed limit of six. Stroll has reached seven energy stores, six control electronics units, six turbochargers and eight power unit ancillary components, all exceeding permitted allocations. Both penalties exceed the 15-place threshold that automatically relegates drivers to the back of the grid regardless of qualifying performance.
