Formula 1 announced the Bahrain Grand Prix will be held at Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit from October 2-4, 2026, rather than in Bahrain due to ongoing regional warfare. The race retains its official title as the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
The original April race in Bahrain was cancelled after Iranian attacks hit targets near the Bahrain International Circuit during late February conflicts. Air traffic restrictions across the region made it impossible to stage the event safely, forcing Formula 1 to seek alternatives.
Sepang was chosen for logistical reasons, sitting between the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 26 and Singapore Grand Prix on October 11. The Malaysian venue has extensive Formula 1 experience, hosting races from 1999 to 2017 before a nine-year absence.
Bahrain remains the nominal host and receives ticket revenue through an agreement with Malaysia. Gulf Air maintains title sponsorship and will operate direct flights between Bahrain and Kuala Lumpur for the race weekend. The arrangement preserves Bahrain's presence on the 2026 calendar despite the venue change.
