George Russell reduced Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli's championship advantage from 81 to 66 points at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, reigniting the title race conversation after Russell had previously ruled himself out of contention. With eight rounds remaining, including a Sprint weekend at Singapore, 208 maximum points are still available.
Russell would need to outscore Antonelli by an average of 8.25 points per round to claim the championship, though Russell faces a likely grid penalty for new power unit components at one of the final rounds. Antonelli completed this requirement ahead of his impressive 19th-to-first charge at Monza.
The British driver has shown strong form at upcoming tracks still on the 2026 schedule, with previous victories at three venues. Russell won his maiden triumph at the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, dominated the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, and earned redemption with a pole-to-victory performance at the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix.
Russell acknowledged the psychological advantage of being the hunter rather than the hunted, stating there is much less pressure on him than Antonelli as the championship fight intensifies. Since the summer break, Russell appears to have made progress adapting his driving style to suit the new generation of cars, culminating in his commanding Azerbaijan victory.
