James Vowles called Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon in December to warn them Williams was in trouble with their 2026 car, which would be overweight and lacking performance. The team principal had to make several difficult phone calls preparing both drivers for a challenging season ahead.
The drivers flew to the UK quickly after the calls and visited the team when it was struggling badly. Vowles described their presence as crucial for motivating staff who had been punched in the stomach by the car's problems, showing leadership by putting team interests above personal concerns.
Williams has managed just 12 points across the 2026 season so far, with a best result of eighth place, leaving them ninth in the constructors' standings. Despite the difficulties, Vowles praised how both drivers have continued supporting the team through the challenging period.
